There’s a unique energy and love at McMurry that I first felt as an 18-year-old on my campus visit. Thirty years later, it’s still going strong. That spirit is one of the many reasons I proudly serve on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and now step into the role of president.
At my first board meeting, we shared what led us to McMurry. For me, it was growing up in Sanderson’s First United Methodist Church, hearing about McMurry from my family and church camp friends (shout-out to Sacramento Methodist Assembly!), and a timely call from Coach Sam Nichols that sealed the deal. Some came for ministry, athletics, music, or simply because it felt like home. Whatever brought us here, we stayed for the community, the mentorship, and the lifelong friendships. Those same things are still drawing in today’s students.
Take a moment to reflect on your own McMurry days. What memories make you smile? What people shaped your journey? I think of my time in FCA, T.I.P., writing for the War Whoop, and being the HEI Sweetheart. I’m also reminded of those who supported us, often behind the scenes, helping us grow into who we are today.

Now, it’s our turn to give back!
Whether it’s time, talent, or treasure, there are countless ways to support current and future McMurry students. Engage: comment on social media posts, participate in surveys, and attend events like Homecoming or Senior Toast. Display McMurry gear: I keep a McMurry sticker on my laptop and an alumni magnet on my car, which have led to some great conversations in airports, schools, and even a Target parking lot! Connect & Contribute at our Alumni Association page.
Have you read the #McMurryMade stories on social media? We’d love to share yours! We are mighty, doing great things, and want to share the greatness! Our current students benefit significantly from alumni willing to share career insights, open eyes, and open doors. Can you mentor, host interns, or chat with a class? In today’s digital world, connecting with and serving others is easier than ever!
Raise your hand if the Servant Leadership Program has helped to guide your path. It’s something that’s shaped every role I’ve had, from hosting KTAB Daybreak at McMurry to teaching in public schools to my current work at Waterford.org. I encourage you to reflect on how you can support McMurry with what you know and love.
How do you get started? Contact Laura King, Director of Alumni Engagement, to explore how you can get involved. You may also have a member of the AABOD reach out about sharing your experiences.
Finally, I invite you to return to campus. See what’s new (hello, Campus Center renovation!) and what still feels like home. Reconnect with old friends and make new ones. Join us for Homecoming, October 9–12. We’ll be here, and we can’t wait to see you!
With gratitude,
Deena Duarte ’99
President, McMurry Alumni Association Board of Directors
Ala Cumba!
